Adverbial clause是指在句中作状语的从句，修饰动词、形容词、副词或整个句子，常表示时间、原因、结果、条件、方式等。

Adverbial clause通常由从属连词引导，从属连词有很多种，如when, while, after, before, since, if, unless, although等等。从属连词后面的从句是adverbial clause。主句与从句之间是一种因果或者时间关系。

时间关系：when, while, before, after, since等。主句与从句表示一个事件发生的时间或者持续的时间。例如：When he arrived, the meeting had already started.（他到达时，会议已经开始了。）
原因关系：because, since, as等。主句与从句表示一个事件发生的原因。例如：Since he was sick, he didn't go to work.（因为他生病了，他没有去上班。）
条件关系：if, unless, provided等。主句与从句表示一个事件发生的条件。例如：If it rains, we'll stay at home.（如果下雨了，我们会呆在家里。）
方式关系：as, like等。主句与从句表示一个事件发生的方式。例如：As he spoke, he became more nervous.（当他讲话时，他变得更紧张了。）

Adverbial clause在句子中作为状语，修饰整个句子、动词、形容词或副词，起到进一步说明句子中某一成分的作用。Adverbial clause的作用与副词相似，但是它能够更加详细地描述一个事件的时间、地点、原因、结果、条件、方式等信息。

Adverbial phrase（状语短语）：与Adverbial clause类似，但是状语短语不是从句，而是由介词短语、动词-ing形式、形容词或副词构成。例如：in the morning, after eating breakfast, with a smile等等。

Independent clause（独立主句）：独立主句可以单独存在，而不需要依赖其他从句或者单词。与Adverbial clause相反，独立主句可以独立组成一句话，而不需要其他的成分。
